necessary very soon? Now at last Darling has admitted that both tax hikes and cuts in public services will be necessary very soon.I appreciate all politicians lie their socks off but the man/woman in the street knew this was coming so why not admit the obvious? Yes I do know this Governments history of mendacity but surely there is a limit even for them ?
Peter and agreeable it's not that every man and his dog didn't know payback time would come for the man in the street and it will be the man/woman in the street who pays and don't be fooled by Labour rhetoric. They have been sucking up to the rich & big business since 1997 and for the future jobs for Labour Ministers in the same big business they will ensure these people feel the least pain.
Mark B as you have obviously noted the Tories did admit it whilst up until yesterday Brown and his mendacious gang denied that they would do the same. They must think we are all mugs !
jamand you are 100% correct.

Its not whether or not tax hikes and cuts in service are necessary considerations, its the depth of the cuts and debilitation of essential services that people fear. And we know from history...how deep, brutal and devastating Tory cuts can be.

Whoever wins the next election will have to cut back on the vast overspend and general waste of the current government.

The difference I suppose it that the Tories admit it.

Of course every knew that eventually we would have to start paying back, but surely that's not the issue.
The issue is that when Labour introduce ways of getting the borrowing down, they will take account of people circumstances and their ability to pay, like introducing the higher rate of tax for those who earn the most, very Labour.

They will not take money away from the most vulnerable, unlike the Conservatives who will (despite all their so called promises) will severely cut back the NHS and will ensure their friends, the wealthy will not suffer.
