Have you noticed society challenges the masculinity of men?

If you're not tall, you're not man enough. If you're not buff, you're not man enough. If you're not rich or ultra confident, you're not man enough. If you're still a virgin or never had a gf you're not man enough. If you get hurt you're not supposed to show it. Why is there this expectation that a man must be this hyper masculine, always confident and assertive, with no fears or emotions, and the better a man can posses these qualities the more of a man he is, as if there were such a consensus.

Women deal with the same thing, with beauty(not pretty enough), weight(not skinny enough), sex(too much of a past), issues, but it seems like men are buying into the hype and spend 8 hours a day in a gym, or go broke trying to get the flashest car or clothes, or repress their emotions and acting like jerks and nothing effects them, all to appear more manly. What's up with that?

Not just the media, environment in general. I guess it's a flaw in our design being social animals.

True. But one would have though by now our (with that intelligence) that we'd be less shallow.
