If so, what was the argument regarding hip hop?
I was recently in a formal classroom debate about hip hop. The question was "Should hip hop be blamed for urban society problems?" I was on the negative side, and i had to convice the judges that hip hop should not be to blame. I actually found out i'm a pretty good debater, and i won the debate for my team. I actually had some surprising rebuttals/arguments to back me up.
So have you been in a debate regarding hip hop? If not, would you want to be in a formal debate about hip hop? If so, what specific argument would you want to debate?
Ok, first off, it wasn't my choice to be on the negative side, the teacher placed me on it. But by society problems the teacher meant drugs, degrading women, gang violence, murder, etc. This is what i used:
-The media giving bad rappers/songs exposure. The bad music wouldn't get exposure if it wasn't given exposure.
-I explained how Little Brother's music was not played by BET because they said it was "too intelligient" and wouldn't appeal to their viewers.
-The team i was debating against said that hip hop was responsible for the deaths of the rappers 2pac, biggie, proof, jam master jay, pimp c, ODB, mac dre, etc.
-I said that only 2 of those rappers were killed by open beefs in hip hop (2pac and biggie). I stated that ODB and pimp c died from drug overdoses, which had nothing to do with hip hop, and that the other rappers were killed because of personal dilemmas with people that had nothing to do with hip hop.
I basically was saying that the media is to blame.
I also said that where a person grows up and the people their surrounded by plays a big part in what they do. People engage in violence because of persuasion and personal choice, not because they listen to hip hop.
