I don't mean to offend the people who believe in that, but I have a hard time distancing myself from them.
My belief in extraterrestrial intelligence has to do with simple math. The galaxy has 200 billion stars like our Sun. Of the several thousand stars closest to us, hundreds of planets have been found, several with the potential for life implying millions of habitable planets in the galaxy. On top of that, there are tens of billions of galaxies in the observable Universe.
So, simple math is why I believe in extraterrestrial life. When I explain this to someone who previously thought belief in ET was all about flying saucers and government conspiracies, they completely change their mind about the possibilities.
