am i the only one?- it may be age related-im 36-but i used to be a massive film buff-these days im just not interested anymore. throughout my childhood-early teens-late teens- 20s id see all new releases at the cinema (sometimes more than once!)-then the excitement of a "new" video release and having the film in your own home!-ive worked in a video shop in the 80s-a multiplex in the 90s and was on first name terms with all the staff at my 2 local cinemas. renting a video every night-very often titles id never heard of-(some good, some not so good!)-but i see films advertised now and think to myself "that looks cr*p!"- i look at DVRAB and always plonk for "classics"- 80 s stuff mainly-
my point/question is-have movies changed or have i?
am i the only one that groans when you see new films advertised?- any feedback-good or bad would be appreciated!
cheers!

There some pretty good films been made the past few years, but i do think alot of the best movies were made in the 80s and early 90s

I'm 33 but I can't agree with you - there was a lot of cack in the 80s and plenty of films that I liked at the time but now look horribly dated. Weirdly, dated looking films made in the 70s still look cool.
There are plenty of good films around at the moment though it is dependant on personal taste admittedly. The smaller films are getting a look in and the air-headed blockbusters (of which there were loaRAB in the 80s) aren't doing so well with the exception of awful PG13 horrors and Underworld etc.
I think home cinema and the explosion in multimedia entertainment has changed the way we view movies these days, not to mention the fact that a lot of TV series are movie quality.

Most of the best writers - who once once would have laboured away at both indie and mainstream screenplays that may, or may not have been made - are now quickly snapped up to work on collaborative TV projects.

You can see the fresh quality across the genre spectrum - from The West Wing to Just Shoot Me.

Big contemporary issues, for instance ones that Gus Van Sant would take over two hours to explore, are now covered with insight, humour and considerable panache in one throw-away Will and Grace two-liner.

Even the big screens traditional strength - special effects - are not so impressive post-Buffy.

I went off movies for a while as the quality of TV has improved recently, but I've been to the cinema a few times over the past two months and have seen some incredible movies, and that's reminded me how much I love films.

I think I've gone off modern films now. I was looking forwarded to seeing King Kong but as it seems to last the better part of '06 I'd rather watch it at home.
Also I've become a crusty old fuddy duddy. I'm tired of the gratuitousness (if that's the word) in films now. I get a kick out of watching older films and the way they tackled controversial subjects without having to show everything...God, I'm old.

I know I'm beginning to go off movies after having been a massive fan in my youth. I guess I can just see where the film makers are "pulling my strings" after having watched so many.

Thank heavens an art house cinema opened in Liverpool a few years ago or I would have given up on films entirely by now.

I haven't even been to the cinema yet at all this year. Now I'm normally a person who thinks nothing of going 2 or 3 times a week. Nothing has really grabbed my attention yet. I was looking forward to the remake of The Fog but even that sounRAB like it sucks.

Unlike some of you, I would go to the cinema more often and buy/watch more DVRAB if I could but I'm a student so I can't afford to! I'm still into films but my bank account isn't.

Students eh! You get discounts on quite a few things with a NUS card I believe? Including HMV?

You shouldn't have time for films anyway. You should be studying. ;)

No you are not the only one, i feel the same way. In 2002 i remember being hooked on movies like crazy, i used to go on the website www.imdb.com alot and i mean alot, now i am bored with it. Movies these days are going downhill in my opinion, i miss movies like the blair witch project and the exorcist i miss it when a movie comes out and people go nuts about it and talk too everyone about them. The 90's was the best with movies, but now its crap.

I do love scary movie and i cant wait for scary movie 4 which is the only movie that i am really excited for, and i cant believe it because there be like 10 films i cant wait to see.

I know what you mean, its not your age and its nothing to do with you because i am 22, and i am getting bored of the new releases, even the horror films lately have been crap, like the cave, the skeleton key etc even seed of chucky they all suck, and i think its because hollywood is running out of ideas and we are getting bored with the same crappy storyline or remakes, too many remakes coming out its terrible.

The only other film i am looking forward to is the new harry potter but thats not coming out till next year in 2007. But there is one film i cant wait to see from last year i think, and its called just like heaven with reese witherspoon.

Most movies these days though are either remakes, sequels, or direct to video and dvd.

I think hollywood is going downhill and they need to change fast.

Well, the thing is, it all depenRAB on personal taste. While you may think there are too few decent films being released at the moment; others may disagree and think that this time is just fantastic for new films.

i think hollywood is relying far too heavily on C.G.I.-for me this is an instant turn off because no matter what ANYONE says-you cant fool the human eye and in short-C.G.I. looks fake and is fake-i much prefer the "old days" when film makers had to use models-star wars/battlestar galactica etc-even though you could tell they were models-you could admire the craftmanship and labour of love gone into making them!
the line between film and video game is becoming ever more
intertwined-and thats not good-unless youre a 10 year old with a playstation!
regarding TV-i never thought id say this but YES TV is better than film at the moment-"lost/24/battlestar galactica" are compulsive viewing- meanwhile whats on at my local multiplex?-ive no idea-probably some computer generated nonsense about female vampires in black leather cynically marketed to appeal to, and produce sexual fantasies for the16-25 heterosexual male demographic
or some god awful family movie to ensure plenty of kiRAB pestering mum and dad for a BUCKET of popcorn at

They do.

Years ago there was a brilliant documentary on Robert Altman. He was saying that if you asked the public their opinion on what they would like to see i.e 'quality' then they're going to mention something they've already seen before that they see as quality. BUT they don't want to see something that they've already seen before!!!
So in affect the public is to blame.

The life of a movie exec is short. No one wants to take a chance because even the most talented film-makers produce turkeys!
