Has The Simpsons Legacy Been Tarnished?

The Simpsons legacy will not disappear because it pioneered an entire genre of animation. That is what it will most likely be remembered for even after the series has long ceased production.:)

I used to enjoy this show, but since the mid to late 90's I stopped watching and whenever I peek in on new episodes they are never really any good. I used to love it though.

Yes; the longer is goes on, it will be remembered less for it's impact on the American animation industry and more for its declining quality, IMO.

So the Simpsons is Micheal Jordon?

I kid, but really they'll be remembered for being good and forgot the lousy last few years, just like we'll forgot Micheal's Wizard career *cough*

In a way, yes... but in another, more accurate way, no.

The Simpsons pioneered a form of comedy that has permeated almost every sector of both television and real life. I do fear the day when I won't be able to call half of the series "great", but its legacy is too widespread to be tarnished by anything less than the destruction of comedy itself.

If it was a gradual decrease in qualityh I would say it was because the Simpsons went on for too long. But there is the problem, it was not a gradual decease, it was a sudden decrease in quality, you went from Simpsons at it's best to Simspons it it's worse between season 9 and seasons eleven.

Has it been on too long? Yes but that is not the problem.

While The Simpsons is a show that's legacy just can't be destroyed no matter what, I'll have to agree the overlong run has tarnished it a little. The decrease in quality didn't help matters either, of course.

No, the Simpsons will always be remembered as a pioneering force in the animation industry, and the later episodes won't change the fact that its first ten seasons are ten years that will probably never be matched by another animated series in sheer quality. And those seasons still air regularly in syndication.

Really, I think once the show finally does end the later seasons will be more or less forgotten.

I dont think The Simpsons legacy will be destroyed by the decline in quality, seeing it how many "casual" viewers of the show does not seem to make a big deal out of the decline, or even be aware of it.

Well think about it this way, what if in the future people's standards of humor changes and they see the Simpsons as getting better as time goes on instead of what we think of now?

Yeah, I know genius amirite?

Eh no. Just because some nostalgic people can't move on from the 90's does doesn't mean the simpsons legacy has been tarnished. The Simpsons still has a strong following and some episodes are better than some of the classic ones that are outdated. Time changes, Comedy standards changes, they changed with time, Shows who stay static don't last 20 years, they last half a decade or a decade at the most.

The Legacy is still intact with over 500 Episodes, Plus one Movie. The Simpsons no matter what will always be remenber.

Well here's the difference between what happened with Michael Jordan, and what's happening with the Simpsons: Michael Jordan only spent a couple of sub-par seasons (by Michael Jordan standards) with the wizards. The Simpsons have put out about a decade worth of sub-par seasons.

Still, the point is people tend not to think about declines once the show/person/whatever stops. Sure, we can complain about the Simpsons decline all we want, because it is happening to us right now, but do you think people will honestly look back on the show once its ended and say "What a no good show. Sure it started good, but became terrible"? I would like to bring up that Tom and Jerry, a classic beloved by nearly everyone on this forum, had to endure decades of mediorcy (And not just spin-offs either, but rather the shorts themselves), and even the Looney Tunes themselves faced a similar situation. Even Happy Days, the show that coined the pharse "Jumping the Shark", is still remembered as a fun little show today. Do people know that there was a decline? Of course. Does that change anyones opinion of these series once they end? Not really, because once its all said and done, people tend to judge a series based on its influence and its best work. The Simpsons has created some of the best episodes, characters, etc. of any show ever created, and while they are currently being misused, the future will judge them for what they did right.

In short, I dont feel that thier legacy is in any danger, they will always be considered a classic and a milestone in both animation and television in general. That being said, yes, these current seasons are horrible, and as a Simpsons fan myself, it is rather unfortunate to see them like this.

I don't think so. The Simpsons indeed are a pale comparison to what they once were, but the legacy they have created in their early days have turned them into the (still) mass-produced, popular, mainstream, beloved (dependable at this point though) TV series as it did 20+ years back.

When we look back at what we considered American culture, you get bet The Simpsons is going to be among that list and that counts for something. Then again, it can be argued this has already happened, so...yeah.
