Has someone stolen my prize?

What do you think about this, guys?

I entered a competition online about 2 months ago, and then forgot about it until a month ago when I was cleaning out my inbox and I found an email saying "check this link to see if you are a winner".

I went to the webpage and was delighted to see my name on the winners' list. However, when I've tried to claim they have told me that I am not the winner.

This was a completely legitimate site and definitely not someone fishing for details (it's almost a government-backed site).

I am a bit suspicious as I have a fairly rare surname and I worked out that the chances of someone else winning with my name (including my first name) were almost zero.

If I didn't claim within the time specified, and they gave it to someone else, then fair enough - but why wouldn't they say that? Could someone have decided to take the prize home because I didn't claim it after several weeks?

Has anyone got any advice? As far as I can see, the rules set down by the people who run the competition are such that if they don't want to give the prize then they don't have to. Is there anyone I can ask? Maybe the company that supplied the prize?

Thanks

Thanks alessanlb, but - honestly - it's a genuine website that SHOULD be trustworthy, it's not a random link that I've clicked on or anything like that. I'd drop the link here but I don't want to give them any ammo saying that I'm badmouthing them or anything. Thanks for the answer though.
