Has "poetry" gotten out of hand?

Okay, so I understand that most people consider free verse to be poetry. I do too, as long as it follows poetic standards. Free verse is essentially rhymed verse without the rhymes. That means that the meter must still exist. That's why it's still VERSE. Without the meter, can something be called poetry?

One misconception that always bugs me is when people think that the rhymes are the most important part of rhymed verse. That's completely WRONG. Rhyme is used to make poetry sing more, but it isn't necessary. Meter is always necessary. It is what holds poetry together.

I think of poetry as a word puzzle. Meter is the way the words are shaped so that they fit together correctly. Rhyme is the pretty picture on the puzzle. Free verse without meter is just a bunch of pieces of cardboard thrown together that don't fit to make a puzzle.

How do you feel about the whole thing?
