Has etiquette and manners become a thing of the past?

I've become painfully aware of the lack of common etiquette displayed these days. Now, I'm a young woman, born to a generation of texters, emailers, instant messagers, and yet, I cringe at blatant misuse and ill regard to common courtesy.

People just don't return phone calls in a timely manner any more, emails are hashed up sentences that leave the receiver wondering if there's even a human with consciousness at the other end. There isn't enough people saying please and thank you either.

I can appreciate a new lingo, a new state of communication, and new standards, but it seems to me that with every stitch of progress we make towards efficiency in our culture, our ability to relate to each other with manners and consideration lessens.

This question was prompted today by me checking my Facebook...only to see the many (and I mean many) rude comments passed back and forth between people...an acquaintance of mine asked me for some ideas for her sons birthday, only to completely ignore my reply and then post that she had made a choice for a birthday for her son, no thanks to anyone else. Instantly, I thought--okay, so a simple acknowledgment of my message would have been fine and a simple 'no, but thank you' would have been appropriate.

Things like that really frustrate and confuse me. A the risk of sounding extreme, I sincerely feel that our social fabric is deteriorating and the seams. Anything is a go, and there aren't any boundaries. People dress without consideration of their surroundings, people speak to one another with out any level of politeness, rude and crass attitudes are more common than not.

I shiver at the idea that my daughter will have to grow up faced by a culture that, in attempt to create ultimate equality and freedom of speech, created an atmosphere without scruples.

Any and all opinions welcomed.
