we all know that there are two China countries in the Olympic movement.

Republic of China (ROC) joined the Olympic Games in 1932. even though they were driven out of Mainland China and settled in Taiwan, it continued to use the name "Republic of China" until 1976 when People Republic of China (PRC) started objecting over the political status of Republic of China which led to their (ROC) boycott of 1976 Montreal and 1980 Moscow Olympics. (for the record, they didnt joined the US-led boycott of the 1980 Games) and they reappeared at the 1984 LA Games using the name Chinese-Taipei (TPE).

as for People's Republic of China (PRC), their national sports association was founded in 1949. but they only joined the Olympic Games in 1984 Los Angeles Games. so technically, they didnt boycott any Olympic Games yet.

China boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. They were one of several countries that boycotted the Olympics that year as a result of the USSR's 1979 invasion of Afghanistan. Also, less well known is that China was completely absent from the Olympic Games from the 1956 games in Melbourne until the winter games of 1980. This was due to the conflict between Taiwan and China, and the IOC referred to Taiwan as China in '56. The chinese athletes did not return until '80.

I would guess that almost everyone should know that China followed Jimmy Carter's advice to boycott the Moscow Games and join the Los Angeles Olympics 4 years later while the Soviets did not.
