Has CGI killed the art of making movies?

Lately I've noticed movies jam packed with special effects just can't hold my attention. It's like they don't care about a good story line and just aim for visual effect. A couple of examples:

Avatar: Highest grossing movie of all time, I tried on 3 separate occasion to watch it and still couldn't finish it. The only reason I continued to try was because it was on BluRay and the picture on my TV was incredible.

2012: Terrible movie, the first escape scene where they are driving to in front the crumbling earth is just too overdone. In fact I think all the scenes with the CGI are overdone.

The Dark Knight: Again took me about 4 days to watch this one, had to just piece it together in the end because it was too long to start from the beginning. Was only interested because Heath Ledger was a terrific actor.

These are just 3 but the list goes on. What ever happened to the story telling of classic movies like 'Citizen Kane'? The vast majority of movies by Alfred Hitchcock? Vertigo, The Man Who Knew Too Much and Rear Window for example.

It seems now people just want to go see movies full of special effects, or movies like Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Superbad (INCREDIBLY overrated), Year One. These movies have virtually no storyline and are so predictable you can basically watch them 5 minutes in advance to what you see on the screen.

Your thoughts on modern movie compared to oldies?
