I have three children 11, 10 and 7. All three of my children were held back in kindergarten and are struggling badly. They've all had the IEP testing done and my 7 yr old has been found qualified for special education but my 10 and 11 yr old were not although they were a grand and a half behind. Now their grades are still reflecting great struggles (D- and F) and they keep telling me they just can't understand their work. I can't seen to get the school to work with me to give me any ideas about what to do and I believe they are losing faith in school because of their struggles. What can I do to help them? How can I get the schools attention to further help my kids?

you can take them to an outside psychologist that can evaluate them and give them a diagnosis and make recommendations to the school....if necessary they will get a 504 or an IEP.........these evaluations are expensive, but they are very thourough.....good luck....don't give up on them.

After spending months trying to get my son the help he needed, I decided I was wasting my time. I figured, if I spent the same amount of time teaching him, as I did fighting the system, he'd actually learn something, and my ulcer would go away. I home schooled him from grades 1 through 12, and he's now in college and doing well. And we did eventually get a doctor's diagnosis, which the school wouldn't accept, because it was not their doctor who did the testing. They told me he suffered from a rare neurological syndrome which defies labeling, which is fancy talk for, gee, something's wrong, but we don't know exactly what it is or how to fix it.
