I read it probably around 5 years ago, and can only remember a few key points in it.
1. There were coal-like mines
2. The miners were branded on their foreheads
3. The main character was female
4. As a result of all the burning coal, most of the people involved in this book had never seen the sky as it was think with smog
5. A key point was that there was no dolphins, or that they were considered mystical creatures
6. The coal was found by some practiced elders being able to 'sense' it. All the elders were male
7. The main female also possessed this ability to 'sense' the coal, but was accused of lying as she was lower class and a woman.
8. I have a nagging feeling that the coal was referred to as fire stones
If anyone has any ideas, that is so awesome!! Sorry if it all seems a bit confusing.
