Has anyone heard of DirectTv not being able to access credit?

We wanted to switch to DirectTV, more channels and cheaper than the one local cable company we have. My boyfriend has perfect PERFECT credit (not a guess, he watches it and knows). Called to order and they said they couldn't access his credit so he would have to pay an additional $300 UP FRONT, that could be paid back at $5 a month. What?! Not only does that increase the price considerably on their special "promotion" but would also take 5 years to pay off. He tried and tried to order a few different times, different days, asked to know which reporting company they were unable to get his credit from so he could contact them and DirectTV just said they couldn't tell him or didn't have the information (likely because there isn't one). I'm sure most people would figure, "Big deal, what's $5 a month?" and pay it, but this just doesn't seem legitimate--almost intentionally. Anyone else have this problem?
