Last night while i was sleeping, I inhaled some stomach acid. I woke up, could hardly breath, my lungs burned like crazy, coughed for about 30 minutes. After tums, and warm water things finally got better, but what was that all about??

What you're describing is a very common symptom of acid reflux. It can cause asthma-like symptoms (difficulty breathing, wheezing, etc.) when the acid irritates your esophagus and airways.

You refluxed in your sleep it came up and was looking for an outlet.I take meRAB, to keep that from happening to me.My hubby every so often has an episode like your describing. He'll be sleeping next thing i know he makes mad dash for the bathroom sink.Hes making a choking noise ,and spitting stuff up.Burns the heck out of his throat, scares the heck out of me cause im sound asleep next to him .Alot of times he gets irritated cause i keep asking if hes ok.Can make you feel like you're having heart attack. So your not alone.Take care.

what a terrible thing to have happen. Goodness. But, maybe you should see your doctor. Anything that gets in your lungs can cause severe infection. Even water can cause infection. Maybe, to be safe, you should see the doc., or at least ask if it could cause a problem.

Concerned in california

It's the acid reaching your lungs. This happened to me too. It is the scariest thing ever. I thought I could never take another breath again. I was straining to get anything into my lungs. Froth was accumalating in my mouth and I was spitting it out.

Eventually I started taking breaths in.

You need to go to doctor and control this.

Good Luck.;)

Thanks for the reply's, well I have not had heartburn ever since I started my insulin for my diabetes. I had 3 yrs of undiagnosed diabetes and once that got under control my heartburn, acid reflux all went away with the first shot. Been heartburn free for the last 10 weeks :)
