yes put him in a kennel and cover it. sometimes they are lonely and that is why they cry. you can also put a clock in there for him to listen to. they are like us scared and generally a kennel type deal they are suppose to feel safe if you brought them up that way.

No, do not take out the voice box as that does not fix the dogs actual problem with regards to separation anxiety and crying.

If the dog is in a crate, cover it. That tends to soothe the dog a bit. The dog will also recover the more it gains confidence and the realization you will always come home.

Which reminds me: when you leave and/or come home, do not make a big deal out of it. Simple put the dog in the crate with no fussing when you are about to leave and when you come home, let the dog out of the crate with no hello's, petting, etc. Pretty much ignore them for the most part.

I found that if you give the dog a) another dog b) a stuffed toy that they really like that reminds them of you really helps. I have had to use both. (at different times with different dogs, try the toy first though)

there are numerous methods to relieve seperation anxiety in a dog. covering his pen, like someone else said, turing on a tv or radio, planned departures, and slowly increasing the amount of time you are gone. As a LAST resort, you can try antianxiety meds perscribed by your vet. NO removing of the voice box and NO bark collars! try googling seperation anxiety, there are a lot of good articles that explain these methods in more detail. good luck!!
