Has anyone experienced a weird grinding gear sound from Nexus one?

I have been using a new Nexus one for about a week now, and every so often (few minutes apart), it makes a noise that best resembles grinding gears. There is no call/alert in operation. When the sound happens, other apps slow down (specially music stops). Is this normal? Have I configured some setting wrong ? Or should I be sending this phone back for RMA?
