Im currently on short term. I work as a nurse in michigan but im canadian. We have no protection over there like in Canada. Ive been there for almost 12 years. I recently (2 months ago) fractured my scapula in three places riding my bike down a hill. Ive never in my life had a sports related injury or broken any bones or taken time off work for an injury. Its my first time in all these years.
In the states you only get 12 weeks and after that its up to the manager to accomodate you but if she doesnt want to, she doesnt have to if she cannot find any work. Then i would go on longterm and continue to wait untl the doc says i can fuly do my job again. I work on a very heavy and busy ICU.
So now i go on my 12 week Dec5 but the doc has me on restriction until jan1. I may lose my job b/c of my injury. I was told htat i have up to 9 months to be considered active at my workplace but will have to find another job internally if they cannot accomodate me or hold my job.
has anyone ever gone through this? I feel very upset that im not being taken care after putting in so many years. I am currently looking for a job in Canada b/c i think they take better care of thier hospital employees and have a union.
Workin g in the states used to be great but now im having scond doubts.
Please i would like to hear some stories of what happened to you when injured and you couldnt do your job for awhile. Did they wait? Did they accomodate you until you healed 100% or did you lose your job unfairly?
