$ 5 a pack?!? You dirt poor rednecks have it good. We were paying that 2 years ago. Now we pay upwards of $7.50.

I guess I shouldn't tell you that the tobacco companies lowered prices soon after--instead of going up $6 a carton here, they only went up $3.

Rule (1) The government DOES NOT raise taxes to increase it's revenue, it does it because it cares for your well-being.
Rule (2) Always start with the health issues, that sure lulls the electorate into a false sense of security.
Rule (3) Once they fall for that chestnut you can convince them of anything.
Rule (4) Continually remind them that "change" is for their own good, that government knows best.
Rule (5) Ignore/outlaw the voice of protest, do they not realise it is we who are in charge? They did vote us in after all.
Rule (6) Those who protest are always... Racist, homophobic, ignorant, anarchic, anti-government, or are unable to accept the immediate demise of the planet should they fail to obey.
Apologies, I digressed, No I have not given up smoking despite a pack costing the equivalent of approx $9, indeed, I feel it is my moral duty to continue.
I will die before I can claim the pension my tax and NI contributions have covered for decades, not to mention the tax on tobacco.
I have not nor will be a drain on the health system, yet my contributions will allow deadbeats and welfare cheats to benefit in my absence. I feel I do a good job!
Good for you on giving up smoking, however, self improvement should be just that, not something dictated to by government who uses your taxes to control you.
Now that is real Socialism in action, take it from a country who is just waking up to it's true ideology.

I quit 3 years ago because of my boyfriend - but here in Alaska a pack of cigarettes is about $7 due to state tobacco taxes, so it's good I quit otherwise I would be broke!
