Yes
I have experience with the H-D SE race tuner EFI controller.
This unit is very good. The problem is it is expensive to buy, expensive to have installed and expensive to have set up. Also any time you need to adjust it because you have installed or changed any components you will have to pay large to have it re adjusted by the dealer.
These are MANY aftermarket EFI controllers. I use a very simple inexpensive 120$ one called a DFO (digital fuel optimizer) on my 2004 stage 1, 88 inch bagger. See in 04 HD did not use O2 sensors so I needed to do this to 'richen' and eliminate the 'poping and backfire' associated with the lean condition the free breathing components I installed caused. It's tiny and a jewelers screwdriver adjusts it potentiometer style screws..
Most dealership mechanics lack the experience to easily set up EFI controllers and will charge 3-5 hours on the dyno to do so. This is rubbish!
One of the best, easiest and most popular is the Dynojet Power Commander. It is expensive at 350$ but YOU can adjust it's maps yourself with a laptop. Also Dynojet's website has TONS of maps available to download to your unit, for almost every imaginable combination of pipe, cams, intake, you could imagine for FREE!
The one drawback with the DJ PowerCommander is it's size and where to mount it.
Understand the 08 has a 'closed loop' EFI and the O2 sensors will do a pretty good job of 'telling' the ECU to richen the mix ON IT'S OWN!!! Especially if you have only added slip ons and a big sucker or similar intake assy.
The dealer won't tell you this though, rather take another grand out of you pocket to install and dyno tune the HD unit or a Power Commander in an attempt to impress you!
If you increase your 96 incher to say 110 inches, if you install lumpier cams, if you mod your heads and ESPECIALLY if you install a pipe which eliminates the O2 sensors YES you WILL need to install an HD SE or similar EFI controller.
By the way... ask yourself how much do the O2 sensors RESTRICT exhaust gas flow??
You will gain HP by removing them but your ECU will loose it's source of 'info' and you will have to make adjustments accordingly!
Ride On!
