Harry Brown, new Michael Caine movie.

I have to say when first hearing about this, with Caine returning to his London roots and playing a hard man it could be interesting.

Until I saw the trailer...

Has to be the most cliched, derivative and hackneyed trailer I have ever seen.

Take 1 part Gran Torino, 1 part Death Wish 3 and mix them together...voila.

Really, we have seen this type of thing a million times before. Man returns home, his town is under seige, his best friend is killed, and he decides to seek revenge.

Very disappointed, was expecting much more from this.
 
No no no no no, don't agree with you. :p

The film looks great. Yeah its cliched and derivative but its Caine and its British and I love films where the baddies get their commupance.

Sometimes we need to take a break from Fellini and Bergman ;)
 
That's also the plot for Dead Man's Shoes (more or less) and that's an excellent film. And kinda like the plot for Get Carter, Unforgiven and maybe Sympathy For Mr Vengeance off the top of my head. All good films.

Being derivative doesn't automatically make it a bad film. Some themes are universal and so keep popping up all the time. Revenge/retribution is one of them.

The trailer I saw didn't show anything but the set-up for why Caine's character takes revenge. You can't judge the whole film based on the plot of the first 30 minutes.
 
I really liked the trailer. If I'm honest, I might end up a little disappointed that this film appears to take a more reactionary stance than I'd hoped for, but it still seems like a good ride to me. As has been said, Dead Man's Shoes was similar and fantastic!

I really like the 'look' of the film from the trailer. Very seedy and lots of saturated colours. I might also be biased though, cos I really like Michael Caine - and Sean Harris and Joseph Gilgun.

It has had mixed reviews, so I'm just going to wait to see which side I fall down on.
 
I'm really to keen to see this movie I think it looks like it could be really good. Dark, gritty, sad, powerful and deep are all worRAB I would use to describe what I've seen of this movie so far.

A really powerful song and accompanying video have made me interested in seeing this film as much as the trailer in the original post.
 
Saw this the other day at a preview screening. Great film, Michael Caine is brilliant in it.
 
I thought the trailer looked awful, one of these "Aren't young people awful" kind of films where it just seems like a 100 minute attack on everything young people do, plus I can't stand Michael Caine.

The reviews and comment I've heard of it are all good but I certainly won't be going to see it.
 
I loved it. I was rooting good ol' Harry on from start to finish.

What made the film so scary was how realistic it was. I'm not sure if we were meant to be agreeing with Harry's behaviour but I wanted him to put those bastarRAB through hell! :p
 
Seen it at the O2 - audience stunned into silence apart from 4 laRAB sniggering at the police station interviews scene, which I thought summed it up really. No respect.

Love Michael Caine - but would not recommend anyone see this - as too depressing, and near enough to what life is like today.
 
The film is by no means original, or especially mentally challenging, but I enjoyed it. Michael Caine is such a good actor, he carries the whole thing along, and its nice to see a decently made British film which has some commercial potential for once.

Its not at all realistic though, I know Elephant & Castle pretty well and although its a shithole, its not that bad! Also the gangs round there are nearly all black, not white as in this movie. Still the most realistic films are often the most boring ones.
 
I really liked it as well. I thought the ending stretched credibility a little too far, but apart from that it was solid and entertaining.
 
Actually thats part of the appeal for me. I WANT to see a film which is brutally realistic. And we Limey tea drinkers do that very well.
 
One of the best films in a long time. Wasnt expecting a lot from the trailers and reviews but my, it was fabulous, disturbing and gripping entertainment. The film itself is shot in such a gritty way with fantastic lighting and edge-of-the-seat realism. I really felt for Caines character. Went into the cinema a bit of a liberal and came out a Death Wish vigilante-esque type bloke, wanting to rid the world of scum.
 
I was wanting more from this film.

I just kept thinking too many white kiRAB for a London estate.

Well I think it was supposed to be a London estate :o
 
Went to see this today - the audience all seemed to watch in a stunned silence.
I expected it to be the UK version of 'Death Wish' but it's in a class of its own - the violence was brutal and realistic and Michael Caine was believable in the role. 8/10
