Harrassment papers went to court clerk unserved. what does this mean?

A girl I was best friends with for a very long time took out cyber stalking charges on me after she texted me and called my son who is physically and mentally handicapped a retarded a$$ and I texted her back, "I'm not going to do this. If you have something to say come to my house and say it and ill handle you." I was planning on moving from that state two days later which I did not knowing she had filed these charges. The police officer evedentally came to my old house the following week to serve me with papers to appear in court and was made aware that I had moved out of state. Well, the officer contacted the girl who filed these papers and told her he couldn't find me to serve the papers and that she could go to court or not. It just depended on what she wanted to do. I know all of this from another person who witnessed the whole thing. Well, she didn't go to court but, the papers are sitting at the couthouse in that county in North Carolina as "returned to court clerk unserved." Well, that was like 1 1/2 years ago and now my old NC drivers license has expired and I need to get my OK drivers license and I am scared to because I have two kids and I can't go to jail. I realize I shouldn't have said what I said to her but I don't take kindly to people talking bad about my children. Also, she didn't even show the officer who filed the report the text message so they don't even know if I threatened her or not. And, how long will they keep this case opened? The girl who filed the charges no longer lives in NC either. She moved like almost a year ago. And, she has tried to contact me but I will not speak to her.
