...this is a good move? -Excerpt
New Delhi - Twenty-five Harley-Davidsons rumbled through the heart of the rain-drenched Indian capital recently, aggressively announcing the arrival of the U.S. company in one of the world's largest motorcycle markets.

The U.S. motorcycle's long-awaited journey to India was enabled by what has come to be called the "mango-motorcycle swap" in 2007 trade negotiations, when the United States decided to allow Indian mangoes to be imported in return for the export of Harley-Davidsons.

Harley-Davidson is now looking for Indian dealers so it can roll out its first bikes in the first half of 2010.

I wonder how people in India will be able to afford a H-D?

Wait nevermind after some research theres is a ton of rich people in India. But there's also a ton of poor people. Hell there's a lot of people period. So a .01 Penetration rate would be 1,000,000 sales.

Harleys are popular or coveted in Europe, Japan, Australia, South Africa and other parts of the world, so I guess there's no reason to think there's affluent people in India who desire and can afford a Harley. It's true there's loads of poor people in India, but they're pretty much the worlds leader in software development. Oh, don't forget answering software help lines as well...we've all experienced someone answering the phone and in a thick Indian accent saying their name is Bill, Mary, John, etc. Yeah sure.

What will be interesting to know is if HD does does all the work of opening up a market for big bikes, if the Japanese companies will try to horn in with their HD styled copies.
