I prob. should have asked this BEFORE my surgery, but does the hardware from a fusion ever have to come out?

Thanks all. Sorry so durab..lol.

I think that is a question we all ask after our surgery. The answer is yes and there are many different reasons for the hardware to be removed. In my case my hardware is loose and neeRAB to be removed., Im sure there are others who know different reasons.I hope this helped a little.ALLIE

Hi again, Stay,
No, that's not a durab question at all.

As long as there are no problems, the hardware can stay in forever. Some people have it out due to pain or loose screws.

I have most of my hardware and don't expect to have it out. I did have to have one hook and part of a rod taken out because they were protruding through my back. It hadn't broken through the skin, but it was very painful to lean back on it.

Many people never have it out.

Take care,
Emily

Okay...I have to add also. If anyone is considering or offered to have their hardware removed, please I beg of you to seek a second/third opininion. You have to understand that if the hardware is removed and you are not fully fused that the fusion can break apart. Then you have a non-union which can be a mess and cause your vertebrae to slip which can require another surgery with roRAB to be re-inserted and mixture of bone, bmp, etc. to be mixed and inserted.
