had phone unlocked from vodafone, and it wont accept any other sims..?

It turns on and works fine but wont let me send or recieve any calls or texts. what can i do to make it work?

This is on the HTC Legend phone.

I go onto network settings and 'select automatically' select setting; it says 'your sim card does not allow connecion to this network.'
