...authority over you? I had an experience at work recently where I told someone I have authority over to stop talking to me in the tone of voice he was using. I didn't like how he was speaking to me. It was argumentative, rude, and somewhat condescending. A friend of his was in the vicinity and overheard me and he said, "Wow- that's really HOT! You can talk that way to me anytime!"

He talked to me that way in front of other people, so I handled it where it took place. I was not rude to him about it.
My boss (a man), tries to be somewhat intimidating and it works with most of his employees. When he gets mad he slams doors, throws things down on desks, makes a lot of noise, sometimes curses, yells, and insults. Even when he's not purposefully trying to intimidate, he typically intimidates people. When he talks to employees (including me) he stands very close to your face. Like inches away..and stares you dead in the eye. From day one I have never taken a step backward when he does this...even though it is a bit out of my comfort zone to have someone that close to me who isn't there to give me a kiss...lol I am not the same way my boss is. I don't like to make people upset or afraid or intimidated. I don't handle people the same way he does, but I do stand up and draw boundaries when I feel I'm being disrespected. Interestingly, my boss does not yell at me, slam my door, throw things down on my desk, insult me, or any number of the other things I've seen him do to others.
In fact, I've worked for him for exactly one year and he's given me four raises.
