Guys....do you ever "joke" about getting married?

I am friends with this guy I've known for a few years. I really love him and I think he feels the same way, but we live so far apart that a relationship is impossible and we never really talk about it.

The other day we were talking and he out of the blue said "Are you ever going to marry me"?

That seems kind of forward...do you think he was joking or half- serious? I can at least assume that he likes me back, right?

Like yesterday, I jokingly asked my girlfriend if she wanted to marry me, and she said yes. Then I broke up with her because she was being serious, and I am not ready for that type of commitment.
