I Have a 5900. Recently the guide displays "info not available" in the regular 3 or 4 hour time blocks, but shows everything in between. eg 7 AM -10AM, 1PM to 4PM, 7PM to 10 PM, 1AM to 4AM etc for a week ahead those same blocks list "no info". If I scroll backwards, often the schedule appears briefly. Is the receiver toast? I suspect hardware defect, not software. I have tried unplugging and starting fresh, a Bell CSR reset through the satellite, no change. Time for a new receiver or is this a software glitch that can be fixed?

Try just pulling out the Smart Card until the screen shows the System Info, then re-insert, it will re-boot then download the Guide Data.

Do you turn it off over night.?

Happens now and then on my 5900's as well. It is definitely a software issue. Doing a reset (pulling the card or pushing the front panel power button for 10 seconds causing a reboot) forces a fresh load and usually solves it. If not, it usually clears itself in an hour or two.

Thanks for your help. I just tried rebooting with the power switch and a second time with the smart card removal, no fix. After each reboot it still shows "no info" at 7 AM/PM and 1AM/PM as far as you scroll ahead. Scrolling back from the future some of the info has appeared. Any other suggestions? The Bell CSR supposedly reset everything through the satellite yesterday when I contacted them. I let it sit for a few hous and see if it clears....

Well the next step for me would be to re-format the Hard Drive I think. Just make sure that you remove any recordings you wish to save, to a DVD burner etc first.

The Guide Data is stored on the Hard Drive so if there are any errors that could be the cause.

I wouldn't do that......this is a software glitch that will correct itself in a couple of hours anyway (and likely just come back periodically). Formatting is a big step. This being a 5x00 series, I bleieve the best you can do is run some diagnositcs (which erase the drive), not an actual format.

The fix that has worked best is removing the card and waiting 10 seconds until the screen changes and then reinserting to reboot. After a few hours all the channels were back and the error "no info" was not as common, only in pairs if rows, and not as frequently. Turning the unit on and off did not do this. I find this all interesting as we have owned this 5900 for several years and have had flawless performance. I don't understand why this problem suddenly occurred. I assumed that something had deteriorated in the hardware, but the improvement indicates it is software for sure. I still don't understand why it would suddenly happen after several years of reliable performance. We are thinking of upgrading to an HD PVR anyway and keeping this 5900 for our cottage. Anyway, thanks for the help; this forum is so much more useful than the Bell CSR I dealt with.

Should we stay with Bell or try a different provider? Maybe this should be a different thread...I am new to forums. Thanks for your comments.

Try calling Bell and stress that this issue has only appeared after the Smart Card swap, they should ship you a new card. It is possible that could be the cause.

it wasn't a smart card swap; I removed my card and then reinserted it to reboot the system. When the system returned the problem still existed, but in a diminished form. The "no info" effor occurred in fewer timeblocks, but it was still there. Maybe it will correct itself overnight. How long does it take to totally download and stabilize after a reboot?

You did a Smart Card swap at the end of last year, right.?

Call Bell tell them this problem has ONLY happened since then.

What do you have to loose.?

I didn't recall that until you prodded my memory. I think I do vaguely remember getting a new card in the mail and switching them. How could this be part of the problem?

The Cards have proved to be problematic on many receivers, mostly older ones admittedly but still I have experienced many failed Card Swaps.

I am not saying it is the problem 100% but lets face it, you don't have anything to loose.

Thank you for your insight. I had forgotten about the swap. Also, I leave my receiver on all the time which I have read is not the best. We will turn it off at night and see if it downloads any fixes. I will also call Bell with a bit more info to share, not just questions. Thanks again for your input.

Bell is always modifying the data stream to "improve" things and add services etc. THis is just one of those things that gets broken along the way. I sincerely doubt (sorry Pinza, I can't back you on this one :) ) that it has anything to do with the card swap. I'd lay out money that this is simply an incompatibility between the EPG data and the firmware (i.e. software) in the receiver.

As I stated, I've seen this happen now and then over the last year or so. It usually self corrects after a couple of hours. Definitely worth calling in for though as that is the only way to get pressure to get it fixed. May also be worth a few $$$ in credit to you.

Rebooting and leaving the receiver off over night seems to have fixed things...the guide is all there this morning. If it happens again at least now what to do to fix it myself and I have a better idea of what to tell Bell if the problem persists. Thanks again for the good advice. This forum is far more useful than the Bell CSR's were to me.

That's because we are actual users of the systems :) Most (or at least the offshore ones) CSRs have never even touched a receiver (or so it seems at times).

Once again, I find myself in 100% agreement with you.

This is why I had every receiver released by Bell, until the 9242. 6141, 9241 & 6131, I just cannot justify buyng these units.

Nothing beats hands on experience.

I've been experiencing the same problem with the guide on my 5900.

So say i have a timer set to record something at 5am, and i turn my receiver off before i go to bed at night. Will the timer automatically turn the receiver on to start the recording?
