GTA IV on xbox360 doesnt load on start up, says the load failed and starting a new game?

I used to play this game for a while fine, but just got into it last week. The autosave works, but when i first start the game, when it tries to load it says load failed, starting a new game. then it starts next to the ship everytime and i have to manually load. the weird thing is, i can manually load from the start menu, as the auttosave file is still there at the bottom, constantly updating with the autosave in my game but just doesnt start on open up. its frustrating. any help would be great. thanks
