Grooming A Maltese???

I was thinking about getting a Maltese. So far the only setbacks are the grooming costs. I was wondering if I kept the hair shorter (1in or less) then would I have to take it to a professional groomer constantly? Also would it be suitable to just groom and brush and home when the hair is long? or short?
