Well I haven't been on the board a lot lately but I do read up on everyone. I think some of the people on the board still remeraber my surgery "360" for L5S1 fusion in January & March of '08. I am having a lot of groin pain :( and I don't know what to do. When I went to the PA at the neurosurgeon's office in Deceraber for my checkup she stated that the groin pain had nothing to do with my back  and ordered a hip x-ray which was done but I still don't have the results. I am going to call her tomorrow. I went to see a Urologist today in regarRAB to my bladder problems I have had since the surgery and he has ordered several tests but he thinks it is coming from my back. I was miserable today because I had a busy day and on my feet for a long time and I could hardly walk after my shopping at Wal-Mart and I still get the sharp pain in my groin if I put weight on that leg. I was trying to help my granRABon adjust the total gym and I have been so sore in my lower back every since. I had a hard time sleeping last night. I know this isn't the board for discussing cervical spine issues but I am also having strong neck pain (I had 2 neck surgeries) and the burning in my scapula which I know is nerve. I just feel terrible and not sure who I need to go to. I really feel that the groin pain is related to my back but she insisted that it isn't. The PA stated in Deceraber that I needed to accept that I will never be completely healed and will always have pain. I can accept that but this groin pain is really bad.

I thought I would come back to this great board and all my spine buddies that helped me during my pre & post surgery and see if you all have any ideas on what is going on. I have been using my Treadmill but going slowly and only doing it at 10 minutes 3 times a day until I feel better. That same leg with the groin pain acts up when I use the treadmill also.

Any suggestions on what you all think??

Thanks

First of all, I think that is completely unfair, mean, and un-compassionate for that PA to tell you that you need to accept the fact that you will be in pain forever.
I believe that your groin pain is related to your back 100%. That is exactly how my pain started. It was only in my left groin. At first I thought I had a bad knot that wouldn't go away. When I started seeking medical treatment for it, I was blown off and told it was a strained muscle. The pain then began spreading, and I now feel it in my lower back, buttocks, left groin, down both legs, and in both feet. I had to take myself to urgent care because my doctor would not take me seriously, and they did an x-ray which showed I have Spondylolisthesis of L5 on S1. An MRI showed that I also have disc disease with an annular tear and bulge at L4-L5, and a disc herniation with loss of disc height at L5-S1. I will probably be having a 2 level fusion.
Doesn't the sciatic nerve run through the groin?

HI I'm new but just noticed your post and if you have ever seen a diagram with what areas of the body are attributed to what herniated disc/nerve there is groin areas on the diagram with what areas of the back can attribute to it.

****REMOVED****

If you see you can have pain in that area (as I've had bad pains searing that area after a bad ESI)
It could be muscular or hernia type pain depending, but, considering you have back problems this could be the culprit.

Feel better.

My chiropractor was fairly certain that this was the problem. The diagnosis was confirmed by my pain specialist. They pretty much based it on my symptoms. He gave me a set of SI joint injections with bupivicaine (a nurabing medicine) and cortisone. When the nurabing medicine took effect, the pain went away, confirming that this was the problem. I wish I could say that it was a permanent fix, but it's not. I got about 2 weeks of relief though and will probably have repeat injections.

Linda,

Is this PA the same doctor from your surgeon office? If so, what is your surgeon saying? Remeraber PA's normally do not have the final say in a practice. If your surgeon is saying you will not get better than I would find another doctor.

i want to share with you that I have had FIVE surgeries and guess what? I am 6 weeks out from surgery tomorrow and am the best that I have been since my 2nd back surgery. I feel that I am healing not 100% perfect but definitely better than I have been in years. I will also tell you that they told me I had failed back syndrome and would never get better. They told me to prepare myself for a life time of meRAB. Guess what? I have reduced my painmeRAB by 40 % !!

Don't give up - make sure you get multiple opinions. Insist on a discogram - I had a perfectly innoncent disc show up as a generator and I think when he fused that level alot of my problems went away with the fusion.

Hang in there. I am here for you and keep on posting. Visit the chronic pain board. I post there with others frequently.

I have had a lot of referred pain to my groin that was due to SI joint dysfunction. I don't know if this could possibly be involved for you, but it's just a thought. Good luck to you.

Thanks guys for the responses because it is nice to have someone else's input and what it could be. Hopefully I will hear something on Monday from the doctor's office. If I can't get some satisfaction from the PA then I will need to make an appt. to see the surgeon and get his ideas. I know my body and I know that something is wrong. I am not saying that it is serious but important enough that someone neeRAB to investigate the problem. I just haven't felt well for the past week. I also know that I am having more pain in my cervical spine also so I need to have that checked too.

I hope everyone has a pain free weekend and hopefully the weather isn't too bad where you live.

Take care

Thanks everyone for your replies. Yes Megs I was upset also when she looked right at me and said she felt I would never be pain free. She did several exams to see if the pain was coming from my hip or back and every time but once I told her the pain was in the back. She said groin pain does not come from your back but I don't believe that either. I do know that by the time I got home yesterday my groin, lower back, left leg and foot were in extreme pain and actually I had poor strength in my left leg.

Yes Pepper this is the PA from my Neurosurgeon's office. You know I really like this surgeon and when I get to see him he is really knowledgeable but you only get to see him when you schedule your surgery and then the first visit after your surgery. I haven't seen him since May '08. We are really limited on good back doctors in our area. I go to Nashville to see my neurosurgeon because no one recommenRAB the ones here at home. I do get aggravated when I can't see him. I called and left a message today because I want to know what the hip x-ray showed since this groin pain seems to be getting worse. Of course no one called me back today. I am sure it is okay because surely if something showed up bad they would have contacted me by now since I had the x-ray on Deceraber 29th. I have followed your many procedures for a couple of years now and you sure have been through a lot. It sounRAB like this surgery may be the one that gets you back on your feet.

Becky I was also thinking about SI Dysfunction because I had read several people talk about their groin pain with this diagnosis. How did you finally get diagnosed with it? This groin pain is very painful and so discouraging because now I feel I am getting the sciatic pain back that I had prior to my L5S1 Fusion.

It was just a bad day today because I didn't sleep at all last night because of my pain and my bladder chose today to start acting up again so I have had several urinary accidents because of it. I will let all of you know when I hear back from the Neurosurgeon's office. Somebody is going to have to do something because it is getting worse NOT better.

Also every time that I have gone in for my post op checkups and they have done x-rays I will ask if there is fusion and two different PA's will say that they don't know about that because the doctor is the one that can diagnose the fusion but they can't. When I was there in Deceraber I told the PA surely there had to be some fusion but she shrugged her shoulder and said she couldn't say. Well I better close for now because the more I think about it the madder I get.

Thanks to All

Has any doctor checked out your hip joint ? They tell me the pain starts in the groin at first.
