groin hernia repair

Cowpin8, they didn't give me a specific reason for having the open surgery, so I'm not too sure what made them choose it. Do you think this may be because of difficulty telling if it's a direct or indirect inguinal hernia?

Well, it's confirmed.. my dad will be flying in from out of state to stay with me after I get my surgery. He will be in one day early so we can visit, and he and my fiance both will go with me to the hospital. They will both bring me home and stay with me the first day. When my fiance has to go to work, my dad will be there. My boss said that if I need to stay home the 2nd week too, just to keep her updated. We have a work holiday one day out of the following week, so I might plan on staying home at least a few more days. Either way, I am going to arrange for parking in an attached garage. I usually walk about 4 blocks from my parking space (it was $6/month for parking compared to $90/month, and I don't mind the walk). Unfortunately I don't have a laptop, so I will be using my iPod touch for wifi! It's definitely better than having no Internet option at all. I also though that it would be good to keep an eye on my dogs anyway... They tend to get excited and seem to always jump into people's laps since they are lap dogs. They're small, but it still hurts to have them jump straight into your stomach or even the groin area (especially after surgery!).

I was hoping it would be more of a moderate pain, yet pretty uncomfortable to move around. I have a pretty good pain tolerance, so I'll just be very careful and make sure to move around carefully and with help! My boss also told me to make sure to not ONLY lay in bed and to get up (carefully) and move around to help the healing process (she has had two hernia repairs).

A few more weeks til I get it done!!

It's pretty painful to be cut open at any time... so it will probably hurt a good bit for the first couple days. After that, it should fairly quickly start to subside. For me it was most uncomfortable sitting up/down, and bending over. Walking (after the first couple days) wasn't bad. I was back at work the week after (literally 7 or 8 days), however someone else drove me as I was still on the drugs. You may not need heavy drugs for as long if you are more pain tolerant than I. So just take it easy, and try not to stress yourself too much... a little at a time without over doing it too much (ie don't expect to walk 4 blocks in only a couple days).

Also, for the first couple days, you probably won't do much except lay in bed, aside from getting up to use the restroom. Your body will need all the energy it can get to heal, the first couple or few days. By day 3 (again use your own judgment based on your pain levels) you should be able to get up mostly on your own, and should try to move around some.

Whether open or laproscopic, I think really depends on the surgeon's abilities and experience.

Good luck! :)

Thanks!

Ugh, I think the most difficult part will be walking up stairs to my third floor apartment after the surgery! Yikes! I'll have two people to help me get up the stairs though, so that will be good.

I know what you mean about your lap dogs. I have 4 Chihuahuas. YES...4!!!
Just for your information my hernia surgeon did me laporascopically and fixed a direct and an indirect hernia at the same time. He found the indirest hernia while he was looking around in there. My groin pain seems to getting a little better lately. I dont want to jinx myself. I had a CT Scan and an MRI in the last 3 weeks or so. Both were fairly normal. I have been resting a lot. Probably too much.
Keep us updated and good luck!!!

I had my repair done in the begining of June using the mesh and plug method. Ever since the general anesthtic started to leave I've felt that something was wrong. I made my first inquiry regarding this feeling to an advice nurse that same day...... in fact, if I recall correctly, I even used the sentance, "something feels as tho its not connected appropriately", and that I felt a "graeatfruit" like lump bunching up under the surgically repaired area, ever since I've reported a myriad of pains and mechanical issues, totaling apprx 50 separate primary care MD, ER, Post~Op Surgicall follow up, Advice Nurse calls, and Psychiatry visits. The most recent more serious issues starting in mid Sept (4 months later, an after being assured of the surgery's success) involving inability/difficulty to pass urine, acheice and retain errection, painful orgasm, intermittant swelling, pressure related pains from extended walking, standing, and epecially sitting, as well as always present substantial moderate area pain (frequently severe and debilitating)

In early Sept my MD and Surgeon began referring and eventually insisted that my issues were obviously Psychiatric in nature, and when seeing the Psychiatrist, being assred equally that what was reported was clearly muscular skelatal in nature. As i was being passed between departments no diagnosis was or has been made, no corse of treatment tendered , or other referrals offered. In fact pain meds were being slowly withdrawn just as my pain levels are increasing and complications are starting to express themselves. I've heard that since hernia surgery is considered minor and simple these are the first procedures a new surgeon performs, and I remember being introduced to a "collegue" moments before being hit with IV twighlight inducing medication.

My medical coverage expired 10/1, and despite my enduring an unsuccessfull appeal process, no one on the HMO's medical or Psychiatric staff would sign to extend my existing CASDI claim: Each citing the others responsibility for care of the primary issue. Not saying I was cleared for work, the organization even refused to intervene on my behalf for both my need for diagnosis and requisite course of treatment AND my emergent financial needs. I now have no medical insurance, no ability to work and earn money, no primary care physician available to me through the county until January, and an undiagnosed, untreated debilitating, pain causing, medical issue that is seemingly getting worse daily: Not to mention facing he spectre of being evicted at the end of this month unless I can put enough money for rent together.

Any suggestions on (makes me sick to even say this) PI/Malpractice legal aid, where to go to get an existing CASDI claim extension, low cost PC Physician etc....

Thanks all. I'm panicked, depressed, shocked, anxious, and frightened because I'm just about out of pain pills and I've no md to provide releif!!!
