i have a 88 jeep cherokee, 4wd has always been hard to engage, recently it started with a loud bang when it engaged, like you hit the trans with a sledge hammer, now it grinds, i put it in neutral put it in 4 low (in a gravel dw or mud) put the jeep in drive and it does this horrible grinding noise and it stops when i put it back in neutral, checked fluid and is full... what should i do? and what in the world is it doing? and btw when it did the bang it would lock in 4l and not give me a prob if it diddnt it would slip out of 4x4 easily.
