It feels like it is coming from the cranks, but could also be the back derailleur. I have washed the bike several times, and it still makes the noise. It is really hard to describe other than it sounds terrible! I went riding the other day and the sound went away for a few minutes, but then came back all of a sudden..Should I take it apart and grease up the parts and then assemble it again? It is almost embarrassing to ride it with this noise...
