green/brown mucous building up behind my uvula.?

I have loads green/brown mucous building up behind my uvula. The uvula also feels gritty and irritated. I don't have a blocked nose and my sinuses feel clear. My throat is, obviously, sore and my voice is husky. I'm coughing up mucous as well, but that feels like its from my throat not my lungs. This has been hanging around for over 7 days, and I'm getting sick of it. How can I tell if this is a viral infection or a bacterial infection?
