Great Video

A few weeks ago someone posted a question about apps to convert videos to play on the TX. I was also looking for an app. like that. I tried all of the ones that were supposed to be the best: Pocket DVD Studio, Pocket DVD Wizard, Teal movie and one called Palm Media Studio. I use TCPMP on my TX. The Palm Media Studio produced the best quality of the bunch but it could not rcognize episodes (tv shows on dvd) and was way too buggy.

Yesterday I found a program that simply puts the other apps to shame. And it is FREE! It's called "PocketDivxEncoder."

if you have already tried this app you need not read further. If you know of something better, please let me in on it.

It produces extremely high quality video with encoded file sizes the same as the other apps. It allows you to adjust file size and video quality. The video and audio run smooth. The picture is so clear that the credits that run after a tv show are smooth and do not appear choppy or blurry as they do with the other apps. That's how I determine quality video. With the other apps you can actually see the pixels; not with this app.

The only downside is that you can't rip directly from a DVD. But, the program is free so you can use the $$ saved to purchase a DVD ripper. I use AoA DVD Ripper, www.aoamedia.com, it converts DVD's to VCD, SVCD, Mpeg and AVI formats (I convert to AVI and then convert to TX using pocketdivxencoder). It allows me to have Episodes of Senfeld and movies on my laptop and I can convert them to play on the TX.

Hope this info gets to the person who wanted it. If not, then maybe others can use it.

Awesome , this is exactly what I need, perhaps you can give me some feedback on the question I posted as I have a T5 and a Zire 72, debating which to keep of the 2.

I am gonna d/l this file right now and give it a try. Happy Happy as I got tired of searching as all I wanna do is convert the mega movie collection I have that are mostly xvid/divx and avi files to a palm os format being small enough to install on my T5 until I get a bigger SD card

OmniQuiti Lathe is sort of the "commercial" version of PocketDivXEncoder, and does work a little better. It's a little faster, a little more automated, a little bit better results, a little bit more support for more types devices, and just a little bit more money ($7.95). I believe they offer a discount if you donated money to PocketDivxEncoder.

I've been a big proponent of PocketDivxEncoder, and admit that I still use both Lathe and PDE, depending on what I'm doing, what the target device is, etc. These are both excellent apps, and I actually donated money or purchased both, which is something I seldom feel the urge to do (especially for freeware).

Just FYI, there are plenty of free DVD rippers available, and the free rippers are usually the best ones.

Will this product convert .m4v files into a format that I can use on my Palm T5?
I will not buy an ipod just to watch a free podcast. Thanks!

I haven't figured out a way to do it. There were several threads on rabroad about using iPodder and some video conversion app to convert it, but I was never able to get it working myself. I also closely followed a tutorial on the Creative Labs forums that told how to convert video Podcasts to WMV files, but could never get that working either.

iPodder will work to download and convert audio Podcasts to MP3's, but I haven't heard of a sure solution for the video Podcasts yet. Just so you don't waste your time searching, iPodder is now called Juice, probably because Apple went after them with a vengeance, which is probably why no one has come forward with a simple app to convert video Podcasts for other devices.
