great bicycle for going up hills?

Hi there, can some one recommend a bike that would make it easier for when trying to pedal uphill,
i assume the bike would be light weight and have lots of gears, i have been told by a friend not to get one with suspension as it would cause to much drag, also i would probably go secondhand as new bikes are very expensive,also i am around 6'2'' 16/17 stone (yes i know that doesn't help)

Check out Pinkbike's http://www.pinkbike.com/ buy/sell section for cross country (XC) bikes.
Cross country bikes tend to have the right geometry, weight, gears etc for going up hills. Some fork suspension also lets you lock them so you don't lose energy unnecessarily; forks with shorter travel tend to be easier for uphill journeys aswell. Mine go from 130mm-150mm and it's not easy when they're at their at max travel.
