Graphic Novel, Comic Book, or Both?

Why exactly do you call them graphic novels? I know that their really long comic books. But, it's really stupid. I had this argument with my friend when they said that it was just called a graphic novel and not a comic book. But, aren't they the same exact thing?
 
no a graphic novel i based off a novel not of a tv show and more a manga is a comic styed book but it is read right to left and mangas are based off of animes from japan
 
More or less I would think. Comic book geeks just like to call it graphic novels to make it sound more sophisticated.

The entire argument is almost as stupid as people who go crazy over the fact that somebody called a manga series, comics. In the end, you're reading the same thing, pictures with words. Call it manga, comic books, graphic novels, or whatever you want, same thing.
