Graphic design major without experience?

I am a freshman music education major. I am probably going to transfer for next spring, and I have also been considering changing my major.

I've always been very interested in art, and I draw and paint a lot (recently got a wacom which I love). Unfortunately I've always been so busy with music that I've never had as much time to devote to visual art. However, recently I've been wondering if I could be happier as an art major.

I don't know that much about the different art majors, been I've been looking into graphic design and illustration. I think I've been leaning towards graphic design because it seems safer, although I might be slightly more interested in illustration.

I have fairly decent basic drawing skills, and I took a drawing class last semester (and a course called "creativity in art and science" which had a lot of art history in it), but I really don't know that much about being an art major and life after, and I haven't started on a portfolio yet.

How difficult would it be for someone like me to transfer to a new school (for next spring) as a graphic design major?

Any tips, good books on the topic, or suggested schools within two hours of northern NJ (I'm an hour away from NYC and two hours from Philly) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
