prompt: what are your thoughts on the idea that television has turned out to isolate people instead of bringing them together?
The invention of the television has had effects contrary to what was hoped for, expected, and even previously experienced. Television has turned out to isolate people instead of bringing them together.
Throughout history, families had remained intimate and close because of their constant communication. Before the invention of the television, families had to formulate their own means of entertaining themselves including reading to each other, playing games with each other, and even simply speaking with each other. However, those means of entertainment are no longer necessary because families can now simply sit themselves in front of the television and be entertained by the antics on the screen. There is no longer that need to communicate within a family, thus leading to more distant, impersonal relationships among its members. By eliminating the need for communication within families, television has ended up isolating people.
In my own personal experience, I have noticed the effects of television on the intimacy of family. With so many different channels and programs on television today, it is nearly impossible to find a program every member of the family agrees upon watching. As a result, members retreat to their own separate rooms to watch the program they desire. There were not such a variety and great number of programs on television in the past, so it was possible for entire families to sit together and watch one agreed upon program. However, with such a myriad of programs available in this generation, it is not likely for a child to want to watch the same program as his or her parents. Instead, they watch what they want to, alone, segregated from the rest of the world.
As television becomes less of a delicacy and more of a commonplace, household object, it is not surprising that the affordability of such an object would increase. Televisions today may be purchased at a relatively cheap price compared to that in the past. As televisions become more affordable, it is more common to see many television sets in one home. Because televisions used to be so expensive, a family was lucky to be able to purchase one, thus forcing a family to share a single set. As it is no longer necessary to share one television set within a family, it is often more comfortable and likely for members of a family to watch their own programs from their own television sets. The decreased cost of television sets has allowed people to isolate themselves by watching various televisions rather than just one like in the past.
Although regrettable, it is unsurprising to find that the invention of the television has isolated people rather than bring them closer. Because of the modernization of the television, communication among families is no longer required. The affordability of televisions and the large number of programs now available also add to the lack of family communication and thus the decline in intimacy.
