I am looking at getting a GPS unit for my bike. First I do not use it much and realy don't want to spring for the Garmin 660 that I know everyone raves about.

I am looking at at units like the Garmin 1450T and the Tomtom 535T something under a couple hundred bucks.

What can you guys tell me? What i need what I dont need the goods the bads the ins the outs of this. Thanks for any and all inout you have.

You might look into a Zumo 550. You can get them fairly cheap now. Has a mount for the bike and car, is waterproof, has bluetooth, and you can add a XM antenna for music traffic and weather. Also does routes

If you don't have to worry about rain as many of us do I currently use a Garmin nuvi 750 and it is okay but as it is not designed for a bike it is not shockproof, waterproof and not easy to see in daylight even though I have a visor for it. I will be getting the Zumo 660 and have found it for just over $600.00. As rstekeur mentioned the 550 should be coming down in price. In short, you get what you pay for.

So have you had any problems with it not being shock proof? I will be looking for the 550 if there are some deals out there to be had. But was just wondering for as much as I would use it if one of these car units would be fine.

I have had my 550 for about 3 years and it is great. Switchs from bike to car, waterproof, shockproof and the mp3 player is a great feature. Friend has a TomTom and he doesn't mind it not being waterproof cause he doesn't ride in the rain, but I know it is his second unit. Not sure why .

On the 'cheap' side, just get one of the Nuvi models (some now less than a hundred bucks). Not a lot of 'bells & whistles'. They ain't waterproof, but a Zip-loc bag does a pretty good job of keep it dry. I've been using a 205 for about four years now and it works just fine.

You mite can find a Nuvi 550 on ebay fairly cheap, I did.(200 bux) They are waterproof, and you can get a more rigid mount from garmin or off ebay as well to withstand the Harley vibriation. It loads maps right from your computer or to a mini SD card. It comes loaded with all the US maps, plus internal battery. I'm currenly useing a garmin streetpilot 2720, but they have been discontinued, so I bought the nuvi for a back up when the SP craps out.

I spent the money and put the 660 on my new limited. Also had the interface module added. I am very happy with this set up. I used the car mount for a trip this weekend. All is goody.
