York has been hit hard by the collapse of MFI, JJB Sports selling their two main stores, Portakabin , The Halifax, Barratts, Persimmon, and all the associated trades of brickies, roofers, tilers, plasterers, window and door suppliers, etc plus our last Toy and Stationery business Magsons finished 200 people this week and Andersons Tailors - 284 years old - plus all their suppliers laying off staff. Currently in the York area we think around three thousand staff so far and around forty thousand by the end of march 2009. February is going to be dreadful, most people who have lost their jobs now will go on the unemployed register then. Don't forget the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise - they have said that York jobs are safe - well actually they're not! The jobs are being transferred all over the country so if you want to keep yours you either have to travel daily or move house outside of your present income area? And in this pernicious climate you can sell your home???? What balderdash! GB said he would end boom and bust, which half do you think he got right?
