[h=3]Headlines[/h]Meeting with Susan Rice
United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice told lawmakers Tuesday that her initial explanation of the deadly Sept. 11 raid in Libya was wrong, but her concession failed to mollify three Republican senators who signaled they would oppose her possible nomination to be secretary of state.
In a closed-door meeting that Rice requested, the ambassador answered questions from Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire about her much-maligned explanations about the cause of the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
"We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get concerning evidence that was leading up to the attack on the consulate," McCain said.
Yasser Arafat
[h=3]Ex-Palestinian leader's body exhumed for tests[/h]Eight years after former Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat's death, his political heirs opened his grave Tuesday and let forensics experts take samples from his remains, in search of evidence that Arafat was poisoned.
Palestinian officials said it would take at least three months to get results, and they might not be conclusive.
[h=3]Quick hits[/h]Manning: An Army private charged in the biggest security breach in U.S. history is trying to avoid trial by claiming he was already punished enough when he was locked up alone in a small cell and forced to sleep naked for several nights. A pretrial hearing began Tuesday in the case of Pfc. Bradley Manning, the Army private charged with spilling U.S. secrets to the website WikiLeaks.
Candice Miller: Looks like U.S. Rep. Candice Miller's bid to chair the House Homeland Security Committee has fallen short. House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday afternoon that the Republican Steering Committee recommended Rep. Mike McCaul of Texas for the top spot on the Homeland Security Committee. Miller, a Harrison Township Republican, is a subcommittee chairwoman and had been looking to move up to the committee chairmanship. The Steering Committee's recommendations are expected to be presented to the full House Republican Conference today for ratification.
Elmo: A Florida man has sued Kevin Clash, the ex-Elmo puppeteer who resigned last week amid sex allegations, saying the voice actor met him in New York after trolling gay telephone chat lines seeking underage boys for sex.
