Google Voice and the Nokia N82: Dial out free?

Howdy all,

I want to dial out using WiFi so all my calls are free. This will require a dialer ap' for my N82/Symbian phone. Right now I use the GV web site to do the job but that requires me to carry my laptop around. Using Gizmo5 to dial costs $$.

Anyone know of a GV dialer compatable with our N82/N95 phones?

Thanks!

BTW, I tried getting voip to work on an E72 (that I'm about to get rid of), from the sticky on this forum. I was never able to get it to work.

The Google Voice app from bdcsoftware doesn't work either.

I've been soooo disappointed with this device.

I had to use Gizmo5 and Nimbuzz to get VOIP/SIP to work on my N82. The settings are very picky and there's almost no help for them on the net. Nimbuzz has its own settings and they work.

Gizmo5 didn't work for me at all. When I click on a contact to make an internet call, it tries to register Gizmo, and it comes back with 'registration failed'.

I then find out that Google bought Gizmo (to integrate it with Google Voice), and it's not compatible with Nokia devices any longer. And I still don't understand, if so, why it's pre-installed on the E72.

It used to work without issue on the E72. After my last reset I noticed that the Gizmo client is no longer available for download. Wish Google would just do something with Gizmo already.

That's why I have to move to an Android phone. Google is buying up and/or developing so many services for its own/Android use, that it's crowding out the available options for Nokia devices.

Next thing you know, Google will be buying Fring and Skype too....

My N82 with Gizmo can still make calls using the GV page to dial out and can get all calls in. Maybe you guys need the settings Nimbuzz provides too?

Nope, as per above, Gizmo doesn't even launch for me.

I go to Contacts, pick the contact name and number, scroll right, click on 'Internet call', the default 'Gizmo' tries to launch, then I get an error message.

So yeah, internet/voip calling isn't working.

I just fired up the E72 to double check and the Gizmo app was there in the Download section and installed easily and I was able to place an Internet call with it. If you have a Gizmo account you don't need to go through the whole SIP install, there's a profile already to go in Control Panel->Net Settings->Download. Make sure you activate the service or it won't dial out.

Well, that's kind of the whole point. I *can't* set up a Gizmo account. It stopped accepting new users after Google bought it. This is the official site: http://www.google.com/gizmo5/

If you had a Gizmo5 account beforehand, then you're good to go. If you're like me and you didn't, you can't make voip calls on your nokia phone, at least, not in the u.s.

Um, what? If you knew you didn't have an account then why are you trying to make calls with the service? How can you even make the statement you made in this thread knowing that you didn't have an account and couldn't get one?

I was *saying* that one of the reasons I got the phone was to be able to make voip calls.

Little did I know was that you needed to have an already existing Gizmo account. Nokia doesn't advertise: 'Potential voip users need to make sure that you created a Gizmo account before service was suspended to new users.'

As far as I know, I can't make voip calls without a Gizmo account. That's the only option I'm shown on the E72.

Where would I find them? There's nothing in Ovi, I looked. And how would I know that they're compatible with my phone? Is there another app store?

Also, the phone defaults to using Gizmo for voip. How do I get it to *not* use it as a default?

When I click on Internet call, from the contacts list, it tries to open Gizmo.

You can use Skype app (won't be integrated) and you can use services like Voipcheap and Callcentric. Check out the services in the Voip sticky thread.

If you only have Gizmo installed then that's the service it's going to try to use for internet calls. If you don't have a voip service set up then don't select Internet calls. :)
