Google Talk Data Usage

Leather Neck

Hey all,

New to Blackberry (8100 Pearl White) and the Rogers Data packages (which aren't that accomodating). On the $25 0.5MB plan and worried about my data usage. They say 10-15 emails a day which is great, but I've discovered how much fun Google Talk and Blackberry Messenger can be! Does anyone have any idea how much data these programs use? If i leave myself online all day is it sending data back and forth and putting me over my tiny data limit!

Thanks,

Tristan

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~ You cannot log out of BlackBerry Messenger but you can log off of GoogleTalk. So yes you may have gone over your allowance in addition to email. I would move up to a different package if you can afford it.

Whichever plan you choose, I suggest the $5 to double your data... 2mb for $45 and 50mb for $65... I started on the 2mb and just using chat programs and BB maps, it wasn't enough.

Thanks all. I know Rogers doesn't provide a way to track your data usage, does anyone know of any apps that you can get on the device to track data? That way I can make a better decision.

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~ I used to use MinuteWatcher.com but they went out of business after 2 carriers stopped sending reports of usage to them.

for what it is worth, my BB pearl says it used 20.20 KB'S of maps to travel 50 KL's at 80 KL's and hour, it only used 5,25 KB's for a return trip on the exact same route

this info is just maps / GPS while driving from Brantfoed to Woodstock

am not on Rogers yet but will be. What plan would you guys recommend if just checking email online (gmail/yahoo) and maybe a little chat? Is the 25mb plan enough for that?

I was on the Rogers .5 megabyte plan and it was never enough, I moved to Telus, for the same price they offer 4MB of data which is adequate for e-mail, and light usage of maps/chat.

Of course CDMA devices are not always as good as GSM but saving myself about $25 per month on my bill is well worth it.

I'm poor cant afford the rogers BB data plans for third party apps i just use the 10MB for $10 mobile navigate package, it allows for Gmail Mobile, Opera Browser, although i have to say I've not used the google talk app, so no info to give there sorry....on a lighter note I just unwrapped my curve :P

i dont use opera, with the latest pearl at&t update, rogers allowed the BB wap browser and MMS to be recived and sent :P, not sure if curve has it?

**** I have 50mb a month and I have only gone over it once(heavy usage month). Most of the time I hover around 35-45mb. I was using goodle talk but I have since switched to im+(got a free license the only reason why) for instant messages. This is my biggest consumer of data. But then again I usually have it running all day.
