In a first for the custom Android ROM community, Google signals its approval to ship a phone with CyanogenMod preinstalled.

Google has approved of Cyanogen's plan to ship CyanogenMod on an Oppo N1.

Come Christmas Eve, CyanogenMod will be the first third-party version of Android to ship on a phone out of the box.

Noted CyanogenMod and Android developer Koushik Datta revealed that Google has approved of a CyanogenMod version of the Oppo N1 to ship on December 24. No other details were revealed in the post, although the currently available version of the N1 costs $599 and is carrier-independent. The current N1 stands out for its enormous 5.9-inch display and rotating camera, but lacks LTE support.The plan to ship CyanogenMod on phones has excited the developer community as a possible way to combat what they see as carrier interference with the Android operating system.
A request for comment by Cyanogen was not immediately returned. CNET will update the story when we learn more.
