Google Chrome Startup Error - Your Preferences Cannot Be Read?

Every time I start Google Chrome I receive this error message along with my Bookmarks disappearing from the Bookmarks Tab. Does anyone have a solution to this problem or a fix, I have Windows XP Home Edition 2002.
