The plotline rings a bell, although it sounRAB pretty similar to the Australian 80s caper Slate, Wyn & Me. But I'm sure I might have seen it years ago on BBC2; when I was growing up in the 90s they were by far the leading proponent of New Zealand cinema on British TV. Everyone seems to remember The Quiet Earth, I also remember stuff like Utu and Starlight Hotel.
