Good roof bike racks?

I have a 2009 honda civic sedan and need to get a bike rack. I wanted to get one that mounts on the roof and is capable of carrying other items, like skis, kayaks, ect. Anyone have any good suggestions for a good bike rack?

Also, information about how you mount them on the roof would be helpful as well. Should I take it somewhere to put it on, or would that be something i would be able to do myself?
 
Hey AliG, I have the same car as you... but a 2008. I opted for a rack on the back. No, not a trunk rack, but rather a trailer hitch rack. I don't trailer anything as the hitch is only for my bike rack. The hitch is always there and you can barely see it.

Here is the take home. The combination of hitch and rack were much cheaper than a roof mount system. I even have the good rack that holds the bike by the wheels instead of hanging by the frame. That way it is like a roof rack as far as 2 bikes not banging into each other. Did I mention that the roof mount systems are expensive?? The last factor was my friend who drove into his garage -- yep -- with his bike on the rack. Damaged the bike, damaged the car, damaged his home, and damaged his ego when he called the insurance agent.

Now If I only had an answer for your kayak and skis. I guess skis wouldn't hit your house going into the garage.
