Good plants for a garden in the Pacific Northwest???

The soil where I live is mostly clay-like, and I really want a garden, but I think the only things I can grow here are native plants to the area. I live along Puget Sound in Washington State, and I see all kinds of beautiful plants here, but I don't know what they are called. or where to find them.
